Check your App Store keyword field
Paste the keywords from App Store Connect to count their bytes against Apple’s 100-byte limit and see which ones waste space. Every finding based on an Apple rule links to the page that states it.
Paste the keyword field from App Store Connect, separated by commas, and the check runs as you type.
The check runs in your browser. Storewake doesn’t send or store what you type.
Apple’s rules the checker uses
Each rule links to the Apple page that states it.
- The keyword field holds up to 100 bytes, and each keyword must be longer than two characters. Your app is already searchable by its name and company name. Apple: Platform version information
- The app name can be up to 30 characters, and so can the subtitle. Apple: App information
- Separate keywords with commas and no spaces. Don’t repeat words from your app name, subtitle or category; your primary and secondary categories are both indexed. Avoid plurals of words you already have, generic terms such as “app” or “game”, filler words such as “the” or “to”, and special characters such as # or @ unless they’re part of your brand identity. Apple: App Store search
- Leave out category names, the word “app” and duplicate words. Special characters don’t carry extra weight when people search. Apple: Creating your product page
What it can’t judge for you
Apple also rules out unauthorized use of trademarked terms, celebrity names and other protected words, competing app names, and terms that aren’t relevant to your app, and says improper use of keywords is a common reason for App Store rejections (Apple: App Store search). Those take judgement, so the checker leaves them to you.
How words are matched is the checker’s own method: it splits keywords into words at spaces and punctuation and ignores capitals. Its plural and filler checks work for English only: it recognises regular English plurals, and the filler words beyond Apple’s examples, “the” and “to”, come from its own short list. It reads other commas, such as full-width, ideographic or Arabic ones, line breaks and tabs as separators so it can still check each keyword, and tells you to replace them.
After the field: where you rank
A keyword only helps if your app shows up for it. Once the field is live, use the free App Store rank checker to see your position for a keyword in any of 49 countries, or let Storewake check every keyword daily and keep the history.
Questions about the keyword field
Is the keyword limit 100 characters or 100 bytes?
App Store Connect’s help gives the limit as 100 bytes, while Apple’s App Store marketing pages say 100 characters. For basic English letters the two are the same. In UTF-8, the encoding this checker counts, most accented letters such as é or ü take two bytes, and Chinese, Japanese, Korean and many Vietnamese letters take three, so a field in those languages fills up sooner.
Should I put a space after each comma?
No. Apple says to separate keywords with commas and no spaces, and every space spends at least one of your 100 bytes; a full-width or non-breaking space spends two or three. Spaces inside a keyword phrase, such as “real estate”, are fine.
Should my keywords repeat my app name?
Apple says not to repeat words that are already in your app name, subtitle or category, and that your app is already searchable by its name and company name. Fill in the optional fields and the checker shows which keywords repeat them.
What does the checker mark as something to fix?
Only Apple’s stated limits and its comma separator: a field over 100 bytes, an app name or subtitle over 30 characters, keywords of two characters or fewer, and separators other than a comma. Everything else is a suggestion: extra spaces cost one to three bytes each, and Apple describes plurals, duplicates, generic and filler words, category names and special characters as wasted space.
Does Storewake see or keep my keywords?
No. The check runs in your browser and what you type is not sent to Storewake. Our analytics record only counts, such as how many keywords and suggestions the field had.
